Acne is the general term that describes acneiform eruptions also known as acne vulgaris. Acne however may also refer to other types of acne. There are a lot of myths about the development of acne, the following is just a short list you may refer to when dealing with acne or trying to understand why you are experiencing acne flare ups.

Myth #1 Poor hygiene causes acne. According to medical practitioners, acne is not the result of not washing your face frequently because the skin ailment is not caused by surface skin oil or dirt. Although excess oil on the skin and the accumulation of dirt can be rather unsightly, washing your face frequently and vigorously will only exacerbate your acne.

Myth #2 Popping pimples will help you get rid of acne. Popping your pimples is not a good idea although it will make your pimples look less conspicuous. The bad thing about popping them is that it will only spread the bacteria on your skin and will cause pimple scars too.

Myth#3 There is a correlation between what you eat and acne development. You are what you eat they say but scientific studies DO NOT show that there is a connection between the skin ailment and diet. This means that food of any kind does not aid in acne development. You should however still eat a balanced diet for your general health.

Myth #4 Wearing makeup and shaving can cause acne. Does this mean you won’t use makeup or will not shave anymore? Do not fret because some cosmetics help fight acne especially those that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Make sure however that if you buy shaving cream or a set of new makeup that they are nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic.

Myth #5 Acne is just a cosmetic ailment. This may be true but those who have been suffering from acne for a very long time have also lost their confidence. The socio-psychological effects of acne is there even if it is usually not given much attention.(Photos via luvcosmetics.com and birthcontrolforacne.net)
